Located on Little Traverse Bay in the northern part of lower Michigan, Petoskey has been home to the Grain Train Natural Foods Market for over 35 years. The Grain Train began in 1971 as a buying club, and then moved to tiny retail quarters on the second floor of a local bookstore. Another move and 25 years in a small historic building in the downtown area, the co-op and membership grew. After years of fund-raising and active member participation in developing a building fund and a plan, the Grain Train built and moved to its current 4,500 square-foot storefront on the western edge of downtown in 2002.
The Grain Train is a cooperatively-owned retail grocer offering a wide range of whole and organic foods, locally grown products ranging from meat, poultry, honey, vegetables and fruits, to support the many small farms, growers and producers in our area. We strive to offer foods and products that are organic and safe for our customers and our environment. Additionally, we offer supplements, personal care products, and cleaning supplies that align with our mission and values. We have an in-house deli and bakery offering superior vegetarian and organic cuisine. A small cafe at the front of our store allows for eat-in or carry-out deli service. In 2006, we began offering organic beer and wine selections.
Our experienced, knowledgeable staff is committed to providing superior service to all our customers. In-store displays, samples and information cards with health and nutrition information, as well as free recipe cards, are available throughout the store. Our health and body care buyer is certified by the American Botanical Council (ABC) and the National Training Institute (NTI) as an Herb Information Specialist. With this certification, we enable our members and customers to make the most informative decision when purchasing vitamins and supplements.
The Grain Train is committed to empowered individuals, vital communities and a healthy planet. As a locally-owned natural foods cooperative, we are the trusted source in northern Michigan for high quality, local, organic, and natural products at a fair value to our members and community.
