NCG Adds Two New Members, Growing Membership to 167

Saint Paul, MN – National Co+op Grocers (NCG), the business services cooperative for retail food co-ops nationwide, today welcomes two new members — Nordland General Store in Washington and North Flint Food Market in Michigan — bringing its total to 167 member co-ops and 242 storefronts in 39 states.

Both co-ops exemplify the resilience, creativity and community ownership that define the cooperative grocery movement. Their openings mark significant milestones not only for their regions, but for the national co-op community as well.

“Each new co-op strengthens the fabric of our shared network,” said C.E. Pugh, CEO of National Co+op Grocers. “Nordland General Store and North Flint Food Market are powerful examples of how communities can come together to support local access to healthy food and build lasting, locally owned solutions. We’re honored to welcome them to the NCG family and to support their success for years to come.”

Nordland General Store – Marrowstone Island, WA

Located on Marrowstone Island, off the eastern coast of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington’s Puget Sound, Nordland General Store has been a local institution since 1922. After a devastating fire in 2020 forced its closure, community members rallied to rebuild and reopen the store — this time as a cooperative. Through determined grassroots fundraising efforts, the island community raised enough to restore their only local grocery outlet.

The rebuilt store, which projects $858,000 in sales in 2025 out of its 2,500-square-foot space (2,000 sq. ft. of retail), reopened to an overwhelming show of community support and celebration. As one of the few retail options on the island, Nordland General Store’s reopening ensures residents once again have convenient access to local, quality food while embodying the cooperative spirit that brought it back to life.

North Flint Food Market – Flint, MI

In Flint, Michigan, the long-awaited North Flint Food Market (NFFM) represents more than a grocery store — it’s a symbol of empowerment and equity for the city’s North Flint community. The co-op, incorporated in 2017, was founded to combat decades of redlining and food apartheid that left the area with limited access to fresh food.

After years of planning, fundraising and construction, NFFM opened to the public on November 12, 2025, with a grand opening celebration planned for January 17, 2026.

The member-owned grocery store will provide healthy, affordable food, create local jobs and reinvest profits into community programs and education. The co-op’s mission is to provide healthy, affordable food, create meaningful job opportunities and empower residents through ownership and shared prosperity.
